PRK EYE SURGERY PROCEDURE

The first step in the process involves a one-on-one evaluation with a laser eye surgery specialist. We will inquire regarding your goals and evaluate your condition. We will also ask questions about your medical history to determine your candidacy for the procedure. PRK is similar to LASIK eye surgery; however, as not everyone is an ideal candidate for LASIK, PRK is an excellent alternative. The procedure is performed as follows:

  • Numbing eye drops are placed in the patient’s eyes for optimal comfort.

  • The outer layer of the cornea, the epithelial, is removed.

  • Using a pre-programmed laser system, the cornea is reshaped to the patient’s prescription.

  • A contact lens is placed in the eyes to promote healing.

The procedure lasts approximately 15 minutes for both eyes. While the procedure provides the same results as LASIK, the recovery period is slightly longer. As the eyes heal, vision becomes clearer and sharper, and continues to improve over time.

CANDIDATES FOR PRK

The only way to know for certain whether you are a candidate for PRK is to schedule an evaluation and meet with a laser eye surgery specialist. Ideal candidates include individuals who:

  • Are over 18 years of age

  • Have thin corneas

  • Have had the same prescription for at least a year

  • Are free from eye infection or cornea abnormalities

  • Are well informed about the procedure, including risks

  • Have realistic expectations

  • Are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism

RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS OF PRK

As with all surgeries, some risk is a factor with PRK, such as over or under correction, dry eye, or corneal haze. Advanced Laser Center staff will discuss any potential complications with you prior to beginning, and will make sure any questions you have are answered.

Patients may experience some discomfort or irritation immediately following the procedure; however, side effects are temporary and can be alleviated with prescribed eye drops.
